About Us
Polar Environmental Technologies, Inc., was founded by Michael Cook in 1998 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Since that time we have worked diligently researching and developing numerous traction enhancing slip grip products that are now being utilized globally. Our products, Xtremegrip™ and Lavagrip™ are durable and aggressive, self stick, safety traction material that can withstand the fury of Mother Nature. With minimal surface preparation, they will adhere to metals including aluminum, to concrete, wood, and a variety of other indoor and outdoor surfaces.
Here is a word from the inventor, Michael Cook;
“I first invented Xtremegrip™ for the bottom of shoes. You can play basket ball on glare ice with this stuff! I remember some of the first tests I made. I retrofitted a pair of Tennis shoes with Xtremegrip™ and took my kids to a frozen creek North of Fairbanks. It was about 10° F. I had only put Xtremegrip™ down the center of the bottom of the shoes. I had incredible traction as I ran across the ice straight ahead but when I tried to turn, there was no Xtremegrip™ on the edges of the shoes and I would begin to slip. As long as I ran straight ahead I could take off in a split second and run and jump and stop. I had complete control! Overall that first test was a tremendous success and I knew I had a winning slip grip product.
Over the next several years I invented a manufacturing process to commercially produce Xtremegrip™. My two sons were both skateboarders so I decided to work on marketing it to skateboarders first. professional boarder. He got on and kicked a couple of times then did a ‘360 kick flip’ and landed on the board. He turned back and looked at me and then turned and did it again. I asked him, “What do you think?” He answered, “I landed it!” When I asked him if he normally landed that trick he told me that he usually landed it one out of every ten times he tried. He then went and did the trick 6 times in a row with Xtremegrip™! I then knew I had a great skateboard product.
My first production run was only a few hundred square feet and I began to sell it to skateboarders in Fairbanks. One of those skaters was at a party and a equipment operator in the North Slope Oil Fields saw it and the next day came into my shop and bought everything I had in stock to prevent slips trips and falls on equipment. He said to me, “Do you know what you have here? This stuff is great! It has uses everywhere!”
After that as I began to ponder all the possible uses, I realized that this product, applied in the right places could actually save lives! I realized that it had the potential to enhance traction surfaces around the world. Since that time I have had the privilege of developing and producing over 50 traction related products and have tested those products in numerous applications and in a wide range of weather conditions.”
